Presentation: 11/04/2007 - NCG - Introducing WPF

Andrew Parsons and I will be presenting back-to-back at the Newcastle Coders Group on Wednesday, April 11th (6->9 PM). There’s actually a funny story behind why we’re presenting on the same night, but it’s potentially embarrassing to Andrew so I’ll leave it up to him to tell the story :) I’ll also avoid stepping on his thunder by letting him announce what his half of the talk will be about.

My half of the talk will be on Windows Presentation Foundation. The NCG hasn’t had a WPF presentation in the past, so this will mostly be an introductory session. Here’s the abstract:

The release of Windows Presentation Foundation heralds a new world of desktop application development; a world where the pixels are virtual, function and form are separated, and any desktop application that you can imagine, you can build. As a fundamental part of .NET 3.0, Windows Presentation Foundation is set to replace Windows Forms, providing us with layout, style, animation and rendering capabilities never before seen on the Windows platform.

Paul Stovell has spent the past 11 months working with WPF in his spare time as part of a personal project, TrialBalance, and is currently developing a rich commercial WPF product internally for Readify. In this 45 minute session, Paul will share with you his top 10 reasons why the “F” in WPF should stand for “Future”, and the “P” for “Pretty Bloody Awesome”.

Here’s a shortlist of topics I’ll intend to cover on the night (the order needs some tweaking):

  1. Virtual pixels and the rendering model
  2. XAML
  3. Composition
  4. Layout
  5. Binding
  6. Dependency Properties
  7. Styles and ControlTemplates
  8. Triggers and Animation
  9. XBAP’s and WPF/E
  10. Blend, XamlPad and a host of other tools

Hope to see some of you there.
